What to Expect
Before the procedure
Informed Concent Class
An "Informed Consent" class is required by Utah law at least 72 hours prior to the procedure. This class gives you information about abortion and the alternatives.
Free Classes: Monday- Friday promptly at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm (Approx. 15 min.)
When You Arrive on day of your procedure
A receptionist will greet you and ask you to complete a medical history form. After a review of your chart, you will be brought to the laboratory where you will leave a urine specimen in order for your pregnancy to be confirmed. A small sample of blood is taken to determine your RH factor and hematicrit.
One of our qualified staff will perform an ultrasound to establish the size of your pregnancy. In a private setting the counselor will then explain the abortion procedure to you. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions, talk about alternatives, and discuss your feelings and concerns about your decision. The counselor will give you post-operative instructions and discuss risks and complications with you. She will also be happy to talk about birth control methods that are available to you. If after this consultation you choose not to have an abortion, you will be referred to agencies or other individuals who can help you with the pregnancy. If you would like to go on with the procedure, you will asked to sign a consent form. A parent or gardian signiture is also required if you are under 18 years of age.
In the procedure room, you will be attended to by a friendly and knowledgable medical assistant and an OB/ GYN Board Certified physician who will perform the procedure.
Once your procedure is completed, you will rest in the recovery room. After approximately 30 minutes, you will be discharged. Most women can return to normal activity the next day.
